This project involved modifying part of the existing Polar Bear exhibit to replace features that had taken a lot of wear simply because of the presence of these powerful beasts. The most apparent damage was to a simulated log spanning water. Due to the sheer size of these beasts this log had taken quite a beating. The greatest challenge with this project involved environmental issues. Since there are a vast number of creatures in the immediate area great care to exhaust the air within this portion of the facility was required because of the potential damaging air borne particles from welding and demolition. Through a cleverly designed filtration system vented through the back of the building to the out of doors this was achieved. The second challenge was transporting massive structural items through the caged bear compound and then working them into position so as not to damage the bears or any other part of the facility.
